The Rev. Ruth Morgan
Assistant to the Rector
I am so delighted and grateful to be serving at Hope+in+the+Desert. I was a member of
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church when the core group was sent out to plant a new church,
Hope. To be serving with this community is a true blessing and joy.

I was raised in Racine Wisconsin. I was brought up in a Roman Catholic Church. Until I
was about nine years old, my family, lived next to the parish rectory, and right behind
the school that was part of the church community. The Church was on the corner and
the Roman Catholic Hospital was right across the street, the nuns who taught at the
school were just across from the Church. As you might imagine I was surrounded by
religious leaders, priests, nuns and many Bishops, and Archbishops that came to visit.

It would be nice to say that I was a model Christian my entire life, but I was not and had
many of the norm teenage ups and downs. Trying drugs, alcohol and getting pregnant
by the age of seventeen. This is really strange because I believed that God had called
me to the priesthood by the age of seven. My call to priesthood never went away. It
took about 50 years, from the hearing the call at seven, to being ordained a priest,
which took place on September 25, 2010.

The first step into the Episcopal Church was by invitation to join a Wednesday evening
Bible study. The study began with the Eucharist, followed by a pot luck meal, ending
with a Bible study. I went to the Wednesday evening program for several months
before I joined the congregation for worship on Sunday morning. I was hooked I loved
the liturgy, very close to the Roman Catholic liturgy so I felt very much at home. And
the people there were so warm and loving.

My husband Felix and I have been married 14 years and together we have six children
and 15 grandchildren.

I try to live my life as Scripture calls me to live. I work at not changing Scripture to fit my
actions. It can be very difficult but if it were easy anyone would do it with no stumbling. I
believe with all my heart that this is what God has called every Christian to do, to live
into Scripture and not make Scripture fit into their lives or the life of the world.
